Top UK Holiday Destinations To Visit This Year

As a travel writer with a young family, the UK has provided an amazing number of places to visit.

Whether its been for work or pleasure, it's easy to be spoilt for choice. There are dozens of places that are of outstanding natural beauty, scientific and educational interest, or just plain fun to visit.

Despite recent global events there's still lots of great holiday destinations and cities to visit here in the UK. Here's a breakdown of some of my favourites;

Liverpool

Well I could hardly pass up the chance to mention my home city could I?
Probably best known as the birthplace of the Beatles, Liverpool is a truly cosmopolitan city and a great destination for a city break holiday.

A city steeped in history, it boasts a world class collection of museums and art galleries.

These include the outstanding Liverpool World Museum. This is easily one of my families favourite places to visit when we come home. Spread over a number of floors, the museum contains exhibits including ancient Egypt, dinosaurs, natural history, early man and our Solar System to name but a few.

There's the historic Albert Dock, which houses the International Slavery Museum and the Merseyside Maritime Museum, both of which I recommend visiting.

In Liverpool, there's also a rich history of great artists who's works can be viewed in some of our many galleries. These include the Walker Art Gallery. For anyone who is a fan of contemporary art there are works by Hockney and Riley on display, whilst fans of more historical art can enjoy Renaissance, Victorian and even Tudor works.

There are also restaurants to suit every taste or craving. From Italian to Thai, Spanish to Korean, and everything in between, Liverpool has something to suit any gastronauts taste for culinary adventure.

Cornwall

Cornwall is one of our favourite UK destinations.
Living in the South West, we're surrounded by some stunning countryside and seascapes, but some of the most beautiful have to be in Cornwall.

The UK's most Southern county has a lot going for it. From beautifully rugged moorland and cliffsides on the North coast to picture postcard villages such as Mevagissey and St.Mawes on the southern coast. Naturally this means it's a must for many walkers and cyclists keen to get off the beaten track and sample some of the most breath taking sights to UK has to offer.

The natural geography of Cornwall means it has a wide and varied topography running it's length with some gorgeous spots to visit. There is more to Cornwall than it's natural beauty however, and there are some fascinating man made places and activities worth a look if paying a visit. These include the Minnack Theatre in St.Ives, Truro Cathedral, the Witches museum in Boscastle or taking in the surf in Newquay. That's right Surfing in Newquay! For those that didn't know, Newquay boasts some of the best surfing in the UK from it's internationally renowned Fistral Beach.

Dorset

Dorset is another jewel down here in the South West and is also steeped in history.

Home to Bournemouth, Poole, Lyme Regis and historical Dorchester, Dorset also boasts the Jurassic Coast, a world heritage site where fossils can be found in the cliffsides.

Towns such as Bournemouth offer sightseeing tours with guides giving visitors glimpses of local history and places of interest, while Lyme Regis is a lovely historical town worthy of a visit any day.

Dorset is another gorgeously beautiful county with stunning countryside and wild coastlines. Of particular note is Durdle Door, a lovely beach with an impressive arch formed from the cliffside and Lulworth Cove is a natural harbour with stunning views.

Oxford

Moving further inland now. Oxford is yet another historical city we have come to love.

Renowned internationally for it's University, any visit will soon make you realise why it is nicknamed the 'City of Dreaming Spires'. There's a lot more to Oxford than the University however.

Here you can enjoy a slow punt on the Thames, or an afternoon tea at any number of traditional tea houses. All the while surrounded by almost 1000 years of history.

Not far from the city there is Blenheim Palace. Home of the 12th Duke of Marlborough, but probably more famous as the birthplace of Sir Winston Churchill. The palace alone is worth visiting to take in the architecture of the building and the acres of grounds to explore.

Housed in Oxford is The Ashmolean Museum is the worlds oldest public museum, and along with the Museum of Natural History, are two destinations definitely worth taking a day to explore.

The Lake District

Back up North, this time to Cumbria, home of the Lake District.

It's been an inspiration to artists, poets and writers for years and upon visiting it's easy to see why.

Nestled among its mountains and lakes are pretty, historic towns such as Kendall, and Ambleside. While the natural beauty of Derwentwater is worth a visit for itself, places such as Honister Pass and Scarfell Pike (one for the brave and fit to attempt) are must see places of outstanding natural beauty. Helvellyn and Lake Windermere are among favourites with tourists and worth making the effort to visit.

Naturally there are lots of opportunities for water sports such as kayaking and windsurfing, but if  you prefer your adventure more land based, cycling and walking paths abound. One word of advice is to be prepared and to pack wisely if heading off. The weather can change quickly and dramatically. Check local forecasts for weather updates, and be prepared to get wet.

So, that's a sample of some of our favourite destinations here in the UK, there's a lot more which I will be updating soon. I'll also be including places to stay, however if you can't wait there's a number of ideal places to stay available via ebooking -  Its a great site to make hotel reservations and to start your exploration of the UK from.

Are there any places you find special or have a place in your heart? A family favourite or somewhere off the beaten track? I'd love to here about your experiences and adventures within the UK!
